Some of the best evenings in Le Perche need no reservation at all. No tasting menu, no wine pairing, no booking three weeks ahead. Just a counter, a friendly face and something hot, wrapped and ready to go.

This series is about those places: quick, generous, and very much loved. The ones we recommend to friends with a grin rather than a whisper, and the ones we find ourselves walking back to more often than we would admit. We write about the long lunches and the farm tables too. This is the other half of how we eat.

We start in Bellême, with a kebab.

New Calif, Place de la République

New Calif sits on Place de la République, right on the main square of Bellême. The square is the heart of the town: the place you cross on the way to everywhere else, and where Bellême comes together on market day.

You will know New Calif by the window. The owner's own face is drawn on the glass in bright orange, glasses and beard and a broad smile, between a palm tree and a kebab spit. Underneath, in big letters, NEW CALIF, and below that, in looping script, Kebab. It makes us smile every time we pass.

Look past the drawing and there he is, behind the counter, smiling the same smile. It is the rare shop sign that is also an accurate portrait.

The order

We take the kebab. It is the reason we keep coming back.

Then there is the wrap, which deserves a paragraph of its own. Order one and they put the fries inside it, in with everything else. Not in a carton on the side, slowly going cold while you finish the main event. Inside, so that every bite has a bit of everything.

It is a very good idea, done very well, and it is the one to order first. Once you have had a wrap this way, it is hard to go back.

If your French is rusty, do not worry. Point, smile, and be ready for the one question every French snack bar asks: sur place ou à emporter ? Eating here, or taking it away?

Why we love it

It is fast food, and it is a proper dinner. There is a difference, and you feel it here.

Most of that is the owner. He is warm and welcoming, the sort of person who makes a quick dinner feel like a visit, and he will not let you leave without a stamp on your loyalty card.

Hold on to it. You will be back, probably sooner than you planned, and the stamps add up quickly. One Thursday becomes the next, a busy evening becomes an easy decision, and before you know it the card is full and the next dinner is on the house.

We are not the only fans. On its Facebook page, 98 percent of reviewers recommend it. In a town the size of Bellême, that is word of mouth doing exactly what it should.

When to go

Thursday is our night. It is also market day in Bellême, so the day starts on the square and, for us, ends there too. Morning at the stalls, evening at the counter. It is a good shape for a day.

Any other evening works just as well. And everything travels well if you would rather take it home: a kebab on the sofa is one of the quieter pleasures of a Le Perche evening.
